Abstract

Energy efficiency will remain one of the most pressing issues in energy policy in the future. The challenge to stabilise or even decrease the amount of energy consumed, while maintaining living standards, is one of the most important tasks for energy policy makers in developed countries. Developing countries, however, find themselves confronted with the need to catch up economically in order to improve their socioeconomic situation. At the same time, warnings about the environmental effects of energy-intensive growth are becoming more pronounced, particularly with regard to the emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs) and associated climate change.
