Political participation in a modern democracy is a seal of approval on individual citizenship and state belonging; it is important for the integration of citizens and the well-being of the state. Identification with the state through political engagement means accepting national institutions, rules and state symbols by understanding their roles and expectations and acknowledging their legitimacy (Maxwell, 2006). Through political participation, the communication of individual and group needs can be represented and understood. Political participation is a foundation of citizenship and of fundamental importance to belonging as a citizen. Political engagement also helps guide political education and further civic and political involvement; it helps to promote certain skills such as communication, organisation and management, as well as psychological characteristics such as trust, confidence and efficacy (Sapiro, 1983).
