Abstract
The Southern African Development Community (SADC) considers gender equality to be one of its central aims. Interestingly, SADC has adopted a relatively ‘holistic’ approach to gender since the outset. As SADC Executive Secretary, Tomáz Augusto Salomão, told the member state representatives:
Only when we realise full gender equality and equity will this be a community of well being, one in which we experience an improved standard of living and an enhanced quality of life. This will be a society marked by freedom, social justice, peace and security.1
