Abstract
Eco-urbanism, the aim of shaping cities to be more environmentally sensitive, is becoming increasingly popular in the People’s Republic of China. The chapter introduces Chinese eco-urbanism by contextualising it within the broader remit of concern over environmental, demographic and economic crisis which has seen Chinese planners and policymakers concerned with an array of issues such as rapid rural-urban migration, environmental despoliation and the question of how to transition towards a higher-value economy. These issues are largely urban in focus, and the rest of the chapter critically considers eco-urban responses to these crises in the largest new-build eco-city project in the world: the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City.
