London 2012: Evaluating the Prospects

The UK is an advanced country that belongs to the G8, and we may expect that it already has a positive score in most, if not all, of the six ecological modernization (EM) indicators. London’s should have no difficulty in at least matching Sydney’s green standards. However, the impact of spending cuts to key services, made by the coalition government to minimize the country’s budget deficit, may significantly affect the current EM standing of the UK and by extension the enriching and amplification of EM capacity that is envisaged by hosting the Games. In its account of these issues, this chapter follows the same strategy that was employed in the preceding chapter to analyse the environmental credentials of three former Olympic hosts.
