The Impact of Rankings on the European Higher Education Landscape

  • Chapter
Book cover Global University Rankings

Abstract

This chapter is written from a perspective which is highly skeptical of current ranking exercises because they often do not provide the information they claim to provide (for example, quality assessment versus reputation assessment), the information they provide is not really relevant to the clientele they want to serve (students) and the consequences are more negative than positive (isomorphism and concentration rather than improving overall system performance).
