Abstract
In India and the UK young Gujaratis are exposed to similar ideologies of companionate marriage and romantic love through global media and travel. In addition, ‘transnational subjectivity’ (Dahinden 2009) or ideologies and beliefs of what constitutes ‘Indianess’ or ‘Gujaratiness’ underpin their links to one another as ‘Indian’ and ‘Non Resident Indian’. Yet even as participants in both contexts are exposed to similar transnational ideologies, their experiences and understandings of relationships and marriage diverge in significant ways.
