Abstract

In northeastern Italy, across the frontier with Slovenia, there is an area called the Carso, which was the scene of murderous battles between the Italians and the Austrians in the First World War. It is a mountainous area, formed by a number of limestone plateaus with sinkholes, caverns, grottos…and partly subterranean rivers and streams, which disappear in the depths of the earth and then suddenly reappear. Geologists call them “Karst phenomena”.
