Abstract
Sport-for-development (SFD) programmes have proliferated in the Caribbean over the last decade because of increased funding and growing interest in the field. With few donors directly financing programmes or expecting formal, independent evaluation, many organisations rely on data collected through internal monitoring and evaluation (M&E) to document their effectiveness. In-depth interviews with coordinators of two SFD programmes — A Ganar and Deportes para la Vida — in six Caribbean countries were carried out to understand organisational practices, successes and challenges pertaining to M&E. Interviews revealed the importance of feedback loops, the inspirational role that M&E data can play for staff and volunteers and various M&E challenges related to time, staff capacity and geography. Recommendations are provided for improving M&E systems and practices in the two highlighted programmes, with implications for other SFD programmes in the Caribbean and beyond.
