Abstract
Hubei is a province of the PRC, situated in central China. Extending across two major river systems — the Yangtze and its largest tributary, the Han — the region adjoins Henan Province to the north, Anhui Province to the east, Jiangxi Province to the southeast, Hunan Province to the south, Chongqing Municipality to the west and Shaanxi Province to the northwest. Hub ei means “north of the lake” in Chinese, referring to its position north of Lake Dongting. It is officially abbreviated to “È”, an ancient name associated with the eastern part of the province since the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC), while a popular, though unofficial, name for it is “Chu” after the powerful state of Chu that existed there during the Eastern Zhou Dynasty (771–221 BC).
