Abstract

Henan is a province of the PRC located in the center of the country. Henan means “south of the river” in Chinese, and it received this name due to its location to the south of the Yellow River, which runs more than 700 km across the region. At present, however, approximately one-quarter of the province lies north of the Yellow River. The name is abbreviated to “Yu,” after Yuzhou, an ancient prefecture that used to include parts of present-day Henan. The Chinese character “Yu” is closely related to that for “elephant,” probably indicating that Henan had a tropical climate in ancient times.
