Abstract
Social cohesion is a concept that many countries and communities aspire to achieve. The conventional wisdom is that cohesive societies are healthy societies. Thus, the concept has become a catchphrase that often finds its way into policy documents and policy papers. Sociologists, too, have become increasingly interested in defining and understanding the factors that can promote social cohesion. Yet despite the increasing interest in this agenda, the concept remains vague and is confused with such terms as peace, citizenship, inclusion, equity and equality.
