Abstract

The previous chapter revealed the true nature of the transition that we face. Rather than a simple shift in power between one or two major states, as we witnessed during the 1980s and the 1990s, we have a conundrum. The future shape of the global business environment and, arguably more importantly, the characteristics of the transition pathways that are ahead of us will not be determined just by the coalitions that control states. Business interests (in the form of market elites) and social movements will have a big say too, making this transition unlike any other within living memory.
