Abstract

The influence of the mafia in economic life, in the financial institutions and the banks, emerged clearly during the Notarbartolo affair and shocked the entire nation. This affair of 1893 contained in concentrated form all those situations which could be considered the leitmotifs of the relationship between the mafia, the economy, finance and politics. A precise image of what the Sicilian mafia represented emerged even at national level.
