Abstract

The finalization of this book coincided with the Rio+20 summit in Rio de Janeiro in the summer of 2012, to which both of the editors contributed. The event, by and large, was torn apart by critics for lagging behind expectations. The intentional absence of U.S. president, Barack Obama, and the publication of statements that had been prepared even before the event led to many questions as to whether it should have been held in the first place. We beg to differ — for a number of reasons.
