Abstract
Co-operatives are frequently highlighted as holding great potential for effective poverty alleviation. Indeed it has even been suggested that organizations with a poverty alleviation mandate such as the World Bank ‘cannot do without engaging with co-operatives, if it is serious about involving organisations of the poor in the Poverty Reduction Strategy Process (PRSP)’ (Simmons and Birchall 2008). By virtue of their nature as economic organizations, co-operatives aim to increase the incomes of members and improve their living standards. At the same time, by virtue of their nature as community-based organizations, they serve to strengthen the capacity and resilience of their members and communities and improve their capacity to control and manage their own development process.
