Abstract

Brazil, a federal republic that occupies 8.5 million square kilometers in South America, entered the second decade of the twenty-first century with a multiethnic Portuguese-speaking population of 190 million people and a gross domestic product of approximately US$2.5 trillion. More than one-fourth of the Brazilian population is engaged in different levels of the education system. About 7 million children are in kindergartens, 30 million in basic schooling, 8.5 million in upper secondary school, 1 million in vocational upper secondary schools, 4 million in youth and adult education (for those who did not complete basic or secondary schooling at the expected age), and 5 million in postschool education.
