Abstract
This chapter provides the historical background necessary to set up the framework for the literary and artistic analyses deployed in the following chapters. Before concentrating on the historical accounts of the Thiaroye mutiny, I will give a brief overview of the French colonization of West Africa, the Code de l’indigénat (Indigenousness Code) imposed by France on overseas populations, the creation and history of the military corps of the tirailleurs sénégalais, and the role of the colonies during World War II.
