Abstract

There appears to be a new fad in the idea of food intolerance. All sorts of experts seem able to trace a very wide variety of psycho-social and medical complaints to a person’s inability to “process” various foods. The explanations for the mechanisms causing the problem remain somewhat unclear and often rather unscientific. But people seem to love the idea: go to a middle-class dinner party and mention the topic, and count the foods that people are avoiding.
