Abstract

Soon after taking office, in a speech at the National Defense University in Washington DC, President Barack Obama spelled out, as other presidents have in the past, the global role of the US when he said: ‘Now, make no mistake, this nation will maintain our military dominance. We will have the strongest armed forces in the history of the world’ (Johnson 2010: 185).
