Abstract

On a September morning in 1980, Miss Helen Martin from Derby, England, walked into her classroom in Istanbul, Turkey, ready to introduce the novel she was going to teach that semester. The classroom was full of 14-year-old girls, and the novel was Pride and Prejudice. Needless to say, the story of Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy captured our young imaginations. I was one of Miss Martin’s students. Twenty years later, at our first reunion, we talked about how much we enjoyed reading Austen’s novel despite all the quizzes and vocabulary tests, and we were surprised how vividly we remembered that particular experience despite the large number of novels we read during our five years together. Pride and Prejudice remained a favorite with many of us.
