National Allegory, Modernization, and the Cinematic Patrimony of the Marcos Regime

Abstract

More than two decades have passed since the debacle of dictator Ferdinand E. Marcos, a key figure in Philippine modernization. Ironically, a regime remembered for its repression of the media is now regarded with profound nostalgia. The sense of nostalgia is most pronounced in the cinema, with recent films attesting to the longevity of the Marcos romance: Dekada 70 (Chito S. Roño, 2002), Imelda (Ramona S. Diaz, 2003), and Pinoy/Blonde (Peque Gallaga, 2005).
