Epilogue: Towards a Non-Psychology

Abstract

With the Enlightenment, the mediaeval motto, plus esten vous, ¹ the idea that there is something in man more than himself, can be said to have ceased being a religious, moral or ethical injunction and become a scientific observation. What is in you more than yourself, science can lay bare. The modern subject no longer looks for evil spirits or a mere weak will but, rather, now we look to the body, to our material being, as the unknown forces which drive us. Plus est en vous became, thus, you are not what you think you are, there is something else and different in you: a stranger in which you are redoubled. The hegemonic discourses pointed out to everyone that they were guilty of a fundamental misconception regarding themselves and, by extension, regarding society.
