Introduction: Prismatic Media, Transnational Circuits

How might experimental media respond to the urgent demand for a complex and emancipatory unity within and between political struggles worldwide? Artworks, documentaries, amateur tapes and reportage, the disparate forms of representation that can be loosely termed “visual media,” mediate after all: they yoke together the subjects who appear on screen, cultural producers and differently positioned audiences distributed across the paths media take through the global system. On what grounds do media appeal to unity? How might they make visible multiple (and sometimes competing) realities and political contradictions? What are the political effects of specific aesthetic strategies for feminist coalitional politics? This project is concerned with how artistic, filmic and documentary projects both figure the specificity of local political struggles and circulate transnationally, configuring and refiguring relations of looking.
