Abstract
Over the past 30 years I have served in the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), ending with an assignment as director general for policy coordination and educational reform. In 2001, I was appointed registrar of Kyoto University. After the corporatization of national universities in 2004, I became vice president in charge of administration, personnel, external relations, and the alumni organization. Kyoto University is one of the oldest imperial universities and recognized as a cradle for original and creative research, with six Nobel Prize laureates in Physics, Chemistry and Medical Science.
