Abstract
Despite some accounts which treat China’s African interests as opportunistic and short-term, Chapter 2 showed that China’s engagements with Africa in fact go back many years. Having said that, the past decade or so has seen the pace of China’s ‘charm offensive’ (Kurlantzick 2008) intensify with a series of high profile political events and policies. This chapter sets out the broad dimensions of China’s renewed engagement with Africa.
