Abstract

The salience of essentialist freedom in modernity is vividly illustrated by the way it straddles the divides between dissonant mainstreams of thought and action. Far from confining itself to Marxism, this paradigm also encompasses key strands of liberalism, one of Marxism’s chief contenders in modern theory and practice. Here we seek to substantiate this claim and to carry further the discussion of the essentialist view.
