Abstract
In addition to describing the judicial and political contexts in which Poland’s penal system operates, this paper also raises a central question that is directly opposite to the one that usually surfaces in this context. Instead of simply asking how far the political situation in Poland has shaped the criminal justice system, it also asks how much, in their turn, criminal justice routines, penal traditions, habits and practices, have infused Poland’s politics and squeezed out more rational and supportive actions in response to crime.
