Abstract
Billionaires have become prominent public players in the global agora. Ted Turner made headlines with his initiative donating $1 billion to the UN two decades ago. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation was built by the Microsoft entrepreneur Bill Gates in 1994. It has become very active in global health issues and international development. Jim Balsillie, one of the brains behind Blackberry established the Center for International Governance and Innovation (CIGI) to identify and develop ideas for global change. And George Soros, the billionaire who ‘broke the Bank of England’ in 1987, is the key figure behind the Open Society Foundations network.
