Abstract
Centripetal dynamics propel the different elements in the centrifuge towards a ‘centre’ and away from the margins; it is a harmonising, or homogenising force in which separate ingredients are combined into something new. Centripetal dialectics aim for the resolution of differences, whether by fusion (as in a magnet, where the two elements are indistinguishable from each other) or into a new, hybrid entity.
…in an age of exclusivist jihads to east and west the notion that people can reconcile more than one cultural identity may have much to recommend it. (Foster cited by Heaney 1996: 202)
