Abstract
On December 27, 2008, Israel launched a limited military operation, code-named Operation Cast Lead (OCL), against Hamas in Gaza.1 On January 3, 2009, it began a ground operation designed to secure areas within the Gaza strip from which Hamas launched rockets against Israeli cities and towns. A cease-fire was announced on January 17 and Israel withdrew its forces on January 21.
