Abstract
The first global news channel based in an Arab country built an international audience quickly after its launch in late 2006. Struggling to gain distribution on American television sets, the network managed to build only a small web audience through streaming video and other online means. After political uprisings started in Tunisia in December 2010 and took off in Egypt and followed by those in Libya, Syria, Yemen, and Bahrain, many Americans turned to Al Jazeera English (AJE) via its website, YouTube page, and social media. The news operation established a superior on-the-ground reporting presence in Egypt, especially in relation to other English-language news media.
