Abstract
It was Christmas day 2002, and a bitter wind was blowing in Diyarbakir, the unofficial capital of Turkey’s southeast. I had flown in from Istanbul the day before, after celebrating an early Christmas with my daughters, who were spending the holiday with their father. The trip had involved a lengthy wait at the airport. Most flights had been cancelled due to poor weather conditions. All of eastern Turkey was under a thick blanket of snow.
