Abstract

Fifty years later, what remained of the years in Shanghai? For decades, most Shanghai Jews focused their energies on the present and future. Their exile experiences paled in comparison to the stories of concentration camp survivors. They gathered occasionally to talk about Shanghai among themselves, especially in New York and San Francisco, where most of them settled. Their first official reunion was organized in 1985 at the Concord Hotel in New York, and there have been periodic gatherings since then. Their story has gradually edged into public consciousness through memoirs and films.
