Abstract
The analysis of the current condition and position of women in southern Africa clearly shows that the three epidemics of HIV and AIDS and stigma have disproportionately affected women and girls, impacting on their lives in many ways. Understanding the factors that drive women’s increasing susceptibility to infection (as well as analysing the impact that HIV and AIDS is having on women as individuals, in households, in communities and in society) is vital to ensure effective responses. In real terms this means that gender inequality must be seen as a driving force in women’s oppression, deepening the vulnerability of women to HIV as well as increasing the impact of HIV and AIDS on the lives of women and girls.
