Abstract

It is over 14 years since I wrote this quote, when, in 1998, I was asked to be the guest editor of a feminist journal addressing the impact of HIV on women; and whilst many things have changed in the HIV and AIDS landscape much has remained the same — especially for women and girls. The quote remains as relevant now as it did then.

Women are facing a crisis that requires urgent attention. The response to HIV and AIDS must be two-fold: a short-term strategy that needs to, as much as possible, reduce the spread of HIV amongst women and lessen the impact of HIV and AIDS on women. However the long-term goal must be to challenge the complexities and inequalities of power relations between men and women in society leading to the transformation of society (Tallis, 1998, p. 13).
