Abstract
It is fascinating to note that of the three spatial dimensions, it is the concept of depth – traditionally identif ed as the third dimension – that is commonly used in Western cultures as a metaphor for intellectual value; specif cally, it relates to the notions of thoroughness, wisdom and even liveliness itself, to the extent that it is now no longer a metaphor, but an actual and proper synonym. We use the image of depth to describe the most authentic qualities of a person, of a piece of work, of an insight – or even of an emotion.
