Part of the book series: International and Development Education ((INTDE))

Abstract

The first modern ranking of universities by U.S. News & World Report in 1983 set into motion a new trend in higher education. Despite initial criticism, ranking systems for higher education institutions (HEIs) have blossomed. Inspired by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development’s (OECD) Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), HEI rankings have expanded to become international assessments (Marginson 2009). The most notable of the international rankings are the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) by Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s Institute of Higher Education and the London Times Higher Education (THE). These ranking systems rely on weighted indicators of an HEI’s research, students, faculty, reputation, and rewards. The rankings produce their results based on the compilation of these indicators.
