Abstract
The growth of the industrial sector in Greater São Paulo after 1945 epitomised the deep transformation which Brazil’s economy underwent in the post-war period as a result of its changing role in the international division of labour. The structural metamorphosis which occurred during this period brought about vast changes in the conditions of supply and demand of work, in the qualifications of the labour force, in wage structures, and in allocation of the labour force among industries and regions. These conditions set the framework within which the relations between employers, workers and governments evolved at the time.
