Abstract
The central concern of this volume is how to account for the variability in social mobility patterns among different immigrant groups and over time within an individual group. Are the differences due to cultural variables or to contextual variables, or, as Vermeulen and Perlmann ask in their introductory Chapters, can culture explain at least some of the differences? In this chapter I explore these questions by reviewing research from three studies that I have carried out with immigrant youth spanning the last 25 years. Each centres on the school performance of students at the secondary or high school level but with a view to the larger community and societal context for schooling and to the interaction among cultural and contextual variables that influence patterns of achievement.
