Abstract

This book has investigated and analysed women’s involvement in prostitution, and in particular the social of meanings of prostitution, poverty and violence. Its aim has been to:

  • identify and analyse the sense that has been made of women’s involvement in prostitution by legal and academic discourse and prostitute women themselves;

  • explain the circumstances in which it is possible for prostitute women to resolve the contradictory effects of involvement in prostitution in a subjectively meaningful way and render coherent the contradictions of being both like and unlike other women.
