This chapter is short. It seeks to make clear something that has been implicit in what has gone before, but which should now be stated. A fundamental contradiction lies at the core of the project of sumptuary regulation. I am not the first to have noticed this fact. The most elegant formulation comes from the pen of Montaigne:
