Abstract

It is a fairly popular subject in the UK and the US to inquire into the quantitative effect of the union/non-union wage differentials. In particular, the number of empirical studies on the effect of trade unions in the US is impressively large, as shown by the number of references given in several survey articles and books such as Lewis (1986), Addison and Hirsch (1989), Booth (1995), etc. The number of studies in Japan, however, is very limited in both quantity and quality.
