The Party Divides
- 18 Downloads
The dissatisfaction in important sectors of the party elite led to the emergence of internal opposition to the party leadership. This chapter will analyse this movement of opposition as an expression of ‘voice’ aimed at reversing a perceived decline in the organisation’s performance. The organisational changes demanded by the opposition, and the broader political aims of the movement, are examined. The chapter also seeks to explain the failure of this opposition to achieve its formal aims, and to assess the damaging consequences of the internal conflict.
