Abstract

A key component of Chinese occupational welfare was a comprehensive ‘Labour Insurance’ (laodong baoxian) scheme which required, by law,1 state enterprises to provide old age pensions and a wide range of benefits covering maternity and birth, illness, accidents and death to employees and their dependants (see Table 1.1, Chapter 1).
