Abstract
Prior to 1996, the Czech Republic was often cited as one of the most successful countries that had made the transition from a centrally planned economy to a market economy. However, during 1996 many hidden problems came to light and a more critical view of the economy prevailed in the following years. The positive view of the economic performance was always based on several macroeconomic indicators, despite the fact that these hardly provided sufficient scope for a reliable evaluation of the transitional results. In this chapter, we argue that it is necessary to discuss the development of the economy in a more detailed way, focusing on the functioning of the individual markets as well as on macroeconomic figures.
