The growth of the Internet has been accompanied by a natural desire to understand the characteristics of its users, their rationale for purchasing the service and what they do when connected. A large and expanding ‘Internet watching’ industry has grown up to supply such data.

  • Internet Strategies (www.internet-strategies.co.uk). This site details the way the corporate sector is using the Internet to initiate strategic change.

  • CommerceNet/Nielsen Internet Demographics Studies (www.commerce.net). Details about the various research programmes undertaken by the organisation including summary findings.

  • The OECD (www.oecd.org). A selection of reports produced by the organisation on all aspects of the Internet and its impact upon business, society and government.

  • Network Wizards (www.nw.com). This site provides statistics of host computers connected to the Internet.

  • RIPE Network Co-ordination Centre (www.ripe.net). Each month this organisation produces a count of the host computers connected to the Internet in Europe.

  • The Information Society Project Office (www.ispo.cec.be). This site contains details of various European Union activities in the arena of the Information Society. It contains a survey conducted during 1997 that was based on 16000 interviews across the European Union on attitudes to Information Technology.

  • The Graphics, Visualisation & Usability Center (www.cc.gatech.edu/gvu). This organisation connects regular surveys into the way in which the WWW is being used.
