An Ontological Approach for Integrating Enterprise, Requirements and System Knowledge

Abstract

The work reported in this chapter is based on an ontological framework for addressing the complexity of the knowledge that is acquired in the early stages of system development in an organisational setting. This complexity arises from various factors such as diversity in views, representations, user backgrounds, domains, organisational, complexity, etc. In our view, the incorporation of Information Systems within an Enterprise must take into account three key areas of knowledge: Enterprise, Requirements and Information System (IS) knowledge. Our project, a Hypermedia Environment for Requirements Engineering (HERE) is a theoretical framework and computer based environment for enhancing the Requirements Engineering (RE) process by addressing the analysis management and communication of this knowledge. Our theoretical framework is mainly based on the innovative use of ontologies for integrating the Enterprise, Requirements and System knowledge into a consistent, manageable entity as well as for linking the various information elements together.
