Abstract

The month before Mário Franque left Chicarre to open the Gaza front, another battalion headed from the Renamo central base to northern Mozambique. Led by Calisto Meque, the battalion included Magurende John, the commander of the Renamo base at Grudja, about 60 km south of the Beira corridor in Sofala. John had gone to Chicarre for a briefing on Renamo’s planned return to the north.
