A Dynamic Analysis of Structural Asymmetries in the European Union

Abstract

In the run-up to EMU there is still no agreement on the state of convergence of the EU economies, nor on the scale of costs and benefits of monetary union.

I wish to thank T. Bayoumi and B. Eichengreen, who very kindly provided the results of their 1996 analysis. This chapter has benefited from valuable discussions with Jean Pisani-Ferry, Claire Lefebvre, Benoit Mojon, Stephanie Guichard, Loic Cadiou, Isabelle Bensidoun, Virginie Coudert and participants at an internal seminar at the CEPII at the XIV Journees d’Economie Mon Taire et Bancaire, Orleans, 1977, and at the ESEM and EEA Annual Conference in Toulouse, September 1997. The usual disclaimers apply.
